Cara Castro

Bio

Cara Castro is a fantasy romance author. Her writing features her Mexican heritage, bisexual representation, honest conversations about mental health, and swoon-worthy (but a little messy) main characters. She loves all things dragons, witches, demons, and magic. When she isn’t writing, Cara loves consuming too much caffeine, playing video games with friends, and cuddling up with her three cats. Cara is represented by Bethany Weaver of Weaver Literary Agency.

I’m here for ALLLL the fantasy romance & romantasy works. I’m especially on the hunt for fantasy with strong romance plotlines and character-driven plots. I want to see real people represented in fantasy settings—not just heroes with a bunch of cool powers without limitations.

I love high fantasy, but I’m also a big fan of low fantasy and spec! Give me your weird post-apocalyptic vampires and sentient houses.

Outside of fantasy, I’m also interested in dark romance—if you have something gritty that’s going to make me swoon, I want to see it!

I’m especially looking for:

  • Characters who struggle with mental health, BIPOC stories (especially Latine rep!!), LGBTQ+ rep (especially bi rep!!), and cross-cultural couples!

  • Angst, angst, and more angst. I want to hurt with your characters, I want to pine with your characters, I want to scream!!

  • Unique worlds and lush, evocative settings

  • Morally grey, broody characters who have a reason to be broody.

  • Enemies-to-lovers, grumpy x sunshine, rivals, second chance romance, or the one bed trope.

  • Love interests that are hopelessly romantic but also complex and tortured

  • Any spice level is welcome!

  • Anything that comps Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross, The Honey Witch by Sydney Shields, The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim, or reminds you of Graceling by Kristin Cashore.

I’m not the best fit for:

  • Love triangles that are going to hurt my feelings

  • Chosen One plotlines that come without struggle

  • Lower YA books

I’m open to, but need a warning for:

  • Cheating plotlines

  • Emotional or physical abuse by a partner that is on-page or mentioned

Mentoring Style

My goal is to establish a mentoring relationship that lasts beyond Smoochpit that is open, honest, and on even footing. This is YOUR book, and I want to be its biggest cheerleader while providing constructive feedback. I hope to provide support through the whole process, from revision to querying and beyond. I'm open to video chats, phone calls, emails--whatever your comfort level is and whatever your needs are. I never want you to feel like you have to question whether or not to reach out to me and ask me a question.
